What is a subluxation?

A Vertebral Subluxation is when one or more of your vertebrae move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves. Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. Interference with the signals traveling over nerves means parts of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their innate abilities. In other words, some part of your body will not be working properly.
It is the responsibility of your Chiropractor to locate subluxations, and reduce or correct them. This is done through a series of chiropractic adjustments specifically designed to correct subluxations. Chiropractors are the only professionals who undergo years of training to be the experts at correcting subluxations.

The top of the graphic shows how signals travel from the organs and spine in normal conditions up the nerves and spinal column to tell the brain what is happening in the body. They arrive from various parts of the body and travel, unaffected up to the brain which is then able to communicate properly with the entire body and co-ordinates proper function.
The lower half of the graphic illustrates a subluxated spinal joint. Here, the spinal joint is subluxated due to a problem in the facet joints. As a result of this problem, 'pain' signals travel from the joint and go up to the brain. These pain signals confuse the brain, preventing it from receiving the proper information it needs from the rest of the body. Since your brain doesn't get the correct information, it can't facilitate proper function and symptoms will begin to appear, such as pain, swelling, or tenderness.
